Cáel M. Keegan, "Getting Disciplined: What’s Trans* about Queer Studies Now?" Journal of Homosexuality 67, no. 3 (2020): 384–397, https://doi.org/10.1080/00918369.2018.1530885. In line with Keegan, I use "trans" to refer to resistant gendered/sexed identities, including both transgender and transsexual, while "trans*" indicates a broader formation encompassing theories, cultural works, politics, bodies, and practices of trans populations. This usage aligns with Avery Tompkins' description in Transgender Studies Quarterly, where the asterisk "opens up transgender or trans to a greater range of meanings" (2014, 26).
